Sabine County Hospital celebrates 45 years of service; Health Fair set for today

Between 1953-1980 there were two city hospitals in Sabine County; one in Pineland and one in Hemphill. On December 23, 1974 the commissioners’ court approved a resolution supporting the formation of a countywide hospital district in Sabine County. A successful countywide election was held and by state legislature Sabine County Hospital District was created in June of 1975. In 1977 bonds were issued for the construction of the hospital facility in the amount of $1,500,000 and years were spent planning construction and furnishing of the hospital.

City of Hemphill Awarded...

The City of Hemphill was awarded a $20,000 SRA Community Assistance Program Grant for the 2nd Qtr of 2025. The award presentation took place 4/22/2025 at city hall. Tom Beall, Don Iles, and Zach Johnson represented SRA and presented the grant check to Mayor Stephen Crowell. This grant will be used to purchase an emergency generator to power municipal operations, maintenance, and services during power outages.

Sheriff’s Report

Sabine County Sheriff George Griffith During the overnight hours, Sabine County Sheriff’s Deputies were patrolling the southern end of the county in the Brookeland, Texas vicinity. Deputies observed a vehicle crossing the white fog line while traveling North on US 96 at FM 149.

West Sabine is proud to announce that earlier this month our FCCLA Chapter brought home some hardware from the state conference: From Mrs. Spring: “I have news from the FCCLA State Conference…for the first time since I have been an advisor at West Sabine we have advanced to Nationals. LaShay Vest and Shun Holman took first place in Spotlight on Projects Families First Division. Woohoo!!! Nationals will be held in Orlando Florida, July 5-9, 2025.” Congratulations!- Sherry Seago Spring

Lakes Area Cruisers recently made a donation to the Pineland Activity and Nutrition Center (PANC) in Pineland in admiration of the work they do to serve the community through congregant and home bound meals and the Sabine County Food Pantry.

This year, we commemorate the 189th anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto. On April 21, 1836, General Sam Houston led the Texan Army against General Santa Anna and the Mexican army in a fight that lasted just 18 minutes. The Texans’ victory paved the way for Texas independence from Mexico and the birth of the Republic of Texas.
