National Day of Prayer 05-04

Body
In the early 1950s, an evangelical movement called for Congress and the President to proclaim a National Day of Prayer. The movement grew and a young leader, Evangelist Billy Graham, led services for approximately 20,000 on the steps of the Capitol on February 3, 1952. Later that year, Congress proclaimed a joint resolution for a National Day of Prayer. President Harry S. Truman proclaimed a National Day of Prayer to be observed on July 4, 1952. Each year since that date, Americans have observed the day in their own way. The observance moved to the first Thursday in May by President Ronald Reagan and has been proclaimed each year since.

Goose the 4 time world champion at the rodeo...

Body

“Gooose”, the 4 time World Champion wild hog wrangler made an appearance at this weekends rodeo in Hemphill and showed the crowd just why he is top dog. Seems the “wild hog wrangling” competition consists of turning a wild hog loose in the arena, then the handler turns the dog loose to aggressively get the hogs attention and force him stand perfectly still for an allotted amount of time. Yep, nowhere but Texas!

History of El Camino Real

Body
In 1691 the first Spanish provincial Governor of Texas, Domingo Teran de los Rios, ordered that a trail be blazed as a direct route from Monclova, then a capital of the province, to the Spanish Missions established among the Indians of East Texas in 1690. Spanish Explorers blazed the road from the Rio Grande across Texas to the River San Francisco De Sabinas (Sabine River). The distance of more than 500 miles was known as the El Camino Real, King’s Highway, which is one of the oldest and most traveled overland routes in North America. Today’s travelers are able to travel parts of the historic El Camino Real which, in 1929, was incorporated into State Highway 21. The road crosses the Toledo Bend Reservoir at the Pendleton Bridge, now spanning the Sabine River and connecting with Highway 6 in Louisiana. This route was later known as the Old San Antonio Road, beginning in Louisiana and transversing the land area that is now Sabine County, the Old San Antonio Road continued westward through Nacogdoches, Crockett, Bastrop, San Antonio, and on to Monclova, Mexico.

Hemphill Rodeo...

Body
The Hemphill Pro Rodeo came to town on Friday and Saturday night (28th and 29th) and was truly an exhibit of professional talent ranging from break-away roping to tie down roping to bull riding to steer dogging to much more. There was a huge number of local kiddos that got in on the act with the crowd pleasing “mutton busting” with several of them scoring up into the 90’s with their great rides!
