April is recognized as National Heartworm Awareness Month as a reminder to protect our furry friends against heartworm disease before mosquito season peaks during the summer. Even though May has arrived, it’s not too late.

On Wednesday April 26th, the Sabine County Ag Committee hosted the Operation Pork Chop Supper with guest speaker Dr. Aaron Sumrall, Director of Research with Pig Brig Services. We were able to host this program and supper due to our community sponsors Fairmount Lumber and General Store, Shelby Savings Bank, who provided a delicious pork dinner, and Hemphill FFA for making our top 3 hunter/trapper plaques. Over the duration of this program 35 feral pigs were eradicated from Sabine County. This year was a small start, but we were excited to kick off this program again and hope it can continue to be successful in years to come. On May 6, 2023, the flags were put up on the lawn of the Hemphill County Courthouse to honor the men and women of law enforcement and the United States military. They will be kept flying through Law Enforcement Week and until the end of the month celebrating Memorial Day.

Early voting and election day results for local ISD Trustee positions were posted over the weekend. West Sabine ISD: Incumbent Lisa Lane beat Mark Wright with 57% of the vote.

Victoria Root (pink shirt with the shears) cuts the ribbon for the Grand Opening of the Pineland Gymnastics Center located at 103 Timberland Hwy. (across the street from the Sabine State Bank in Pineland). They offer local and affordable gymnastics and tumbling classes for the Sabine County communities. Victoria “Tori” Root is the granddaughter of Pineland natives, ElRay and Jean Dickerson. Upon graduating from Brookeland High School in 2013, she moved to Baton Rouge to attend Louisiana State University. During her time in Baton Rogue she began coaching gymnastics at a local gym where she trained and became a USAG certified gymnastics instructor for both boys and girls recreational gymnastics and competitive gymnastics. Settling back in her hometown of Pineland, she opened the Pineland Gymnastics Center and you can learn all about classes at www.pinelandgym.com
