Among the Pines

Body
Living in the south, trains are seen mainly as a means to transport cargo. Each year when I begin my lessons in US History, the students first draw a map of the Transcontinental Railroad as a way to situate themselves historically and geographically. To them, trains are merely the means to transport cargo. They know, of course, about sleeper cars and hobos who rode the rails during the Great Depression, but what many of them don't realize is that you can still travel by train today. Always up for an adventure, I knew it was something I had to try and let them know how it went.

The first few bills have made it to the Governor’s desk for his signature, which signals the end of session is fast approaching. Of the over 8,000 bills filed this session, just over 100 bills and joint resolutions have been sent to the governor and four have been signed into law.

Property Assessment Value hot topic at Sabine County Republican Meeting; tax code explained

Body
The Sabine County Republicans meeting was pretty packed Thursday night. RD Griffin, leader, pointed out that typically the monthly meetings aren’t large, just officers and a few faithful. But this night dozens were on hand with interest and questions concerning property taxes in Sabine County.

A Blast of Cold

Pollen tries to just take over, this time of year. Hopefully, it is on it’s way out. So, I have decided to wash down my porch, hoping to rid myself of the allergy causing, yellow dust. I will be very glad to see the last of it. I’m sure I’m not the only one.

DEFECTTIONS IN BIBLE TIMES It should come as no surprise that there are departures today from the doctrine of Christ. This was true even in the days when the apostles of Christ were living and guiding others in the most Holy Faith. Take note of some Bible examples: The apostle Paul stated: “For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world” (2 Timothy 4:10). Demas had formerly been a companion and fellow-laborer (Colossians 4:14; Philemon 24).

Wings of a Dove

Body
“ And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest.” Psalms 55:6 “I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.” Psalms 23:6 As usual, our backyard is filled with doves. When we moved to San Augustine years ago, we had only Mourning Doves, but now we also have Inca Doves, Collared Doves and for the past two years, White-wing Doves. All three have certain things in common. When we walk up on them, they all burst up swiftly on the take-off and and within seconds are across the big field behind the house. They fly up so quickly that they sometimes inadvertently drag their eggs from the nest as they fly upwards. When I see them disappear across the field, I more clearly understand David’s words, “If I had the wings of a dove, I would fly away.”
