The new VFW Post 10351 Commander Frank Torres (pictured left) assumes command from the outgoing Commander Curtis Buckner (pictured right). Frank is also the CEO/COO of the 501c that is run by Veterans whose Fiscal Year begins July 1 through June 30. The VFW Auxiliary President is Sherry Thibodeaux. Leadership positions are elected by the existing membership. The VFW Mission Statement is Service to the Veteran, Service to the Community, and Service to the Youth.

The Sabine County Republican party will meet the 2nd Thursday this month, August 8th @ 6:30 pm at the Chamber of Commerce office in Hemphill. Rhonda Ward, our Senate Dist. 3 committeewoman to Republican State Executive Committee will be the guest speaker. This will be our first meeting since the state convention.

Congratulations goes out to Hemphill local Marshall Hughes for qualifying for the MLF Bass Pro Tour (BPT) 2025 season. In order to qualify, an angler must wind up in the top 5 positions in points in the invitationals (out of 150 contestants). There are only 60 anglers on the BPT each season.

This month Houston and the Gulf Coast were devastated by Hurricane Beryl, which made landfall Monday, July 8 near Matagorda. Thirty-six Texans died during and after the storm and 2.3 million were left without power, some for almost two weeks. Hearings were held in Austin to assess the response and hold utility companies accountable that did not perform well, including CenterPoint Entergy.

Governor Greg Abbott issued a statement on Vice President Kamala Harris’ continued refusal to address the border crisis. Three years ago, Governor Abbott sent Vice President Harris a letter soon after she was appointed Border Czar by President Joe Biden, urging her to visit the border to see the crisis for herself and to take swift action to secure the border.

Excitement mounts as the first summer camp of the Hemphill Little Theatre is in full swing. 17 Young students ranging in Age of 8 to 15 have been rehearsing for 4 days, painting sets, sewing costumes and rehearsing lines to bring the production of 'Annie Jr '' to the stage on August 2 for a 3 night show.
