Cafe in the Pines...

Body
Opening soon on the Hemphill Square, Cafe in the Pines will have a Rooster Breakfast special, which will be grab and go items from 5:30am to 6:30am or until sold out. They will mainly be breakfast sandwiches and will come with a drink for people who are traveling for work. It’s kinda going to be a special menu just for them while they are getting everything together to open up for folks to come in and eat breakfast and lunch. They are also hoping to be as farm-to-table as possible and will have gluten friendly and vegetarian options on the menu. I had the pleasure of trying a cherry scone on Monday and wow! There isn’t an official open date, due to updating some permits and inspections, but it will be early August.

Burkeville ISD Schools announced to Continue National School Breakfast & Lunch Program

Body
The Burkeville ISD Schools announced today to continue its policy for serving meals to children served under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program for the 2024- 2025 school year. Schools qualifying to operate the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) provide breakfast and lunch to all children at no charge and eliminate the collection of meal applications for free, reduced-price, and paid student meals. This new approach reduces burdens for both families and school administrators and helps ensure that students receive nutritious meals. While no application or eligibility determination process is required for your student to receive free meals this school year, the income eligibility requirements will likely resume in the 2025-2026 school year. Additional items purchases will be on a cash only purchase and no charging will be allowed.

ADAM’S OFF OX

Body
Many of you have no doubt heard a person say that he didn’t know someone else from Adam’s off ox, but you may not have stopped to consider the peculiar aptness of this folk expression. I recall my grandparents and parents would use the phrase quite often but I never thought to delve into what the words truly meant. What is an “off ox”, and who was “Adam”? What did this have to do with not knowing somebody?

Oak Tree at Library...

Body
Sadly, the once giant and majestic (probably 100 years old) Oak tree that stood on the west side of the J. R. Huffman Public Library property is no more. It started dying and had become a danger to people and property due to its enormous size and potential of falling limbs. A to Z Tree Service, a local Hemphill company for over 25 years (owner and crew is pictured above), came to the rescue Saturday morning and removed the tree...free of charge. That's not only great service, that's the Hemphill way of neighbor helping neighbor!
