The Hemphill Hornets capped off a remarkable season at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association State Championship in March. They traveled to Edinburg and Abilene, earning a state title, a state bronze, breaking records, and finishing among the top teams in Texas.
The 2026 Hemphill Diamond League season got off to an exciting and communityfilled start on Saturday, March 28, as families, players, and supporters gathered at the Hemphill Diamond League fields for a full day of opening ceremonies and activities.
Sabine County faceoffs again Tuesday night for Hemphill and West Sabine on the diamonds. This time the Hornets came out on top. The ladies bested the tigers 11-5 and the Hornet Varisty Boys won 5 to 3.
It was a good week all around for all the local baseball and softball squads. The Brookeland Wildcats got off the deck this past week with with an 8-1 win over Apple Springs and a 10-0 win over Burkeville, in which starter Sam Ross would fan 15 Mustangs in total. The Lady Cats took big wins over Beaumont Kelly Catholic March 24(15-1 )March 24 and Burkeville(16-0)March 27. Paige Powell and Lakyn Mott took the wins in the circle with strong performances. Both squads will take on Zavalla April 2 and Chester April 7, while the Wildcats will play Evadale April 6 as well.
On the evening of Tuesday, March 17, the atmosphere at The Seed Patch (181 Milam St.) felt less like an afterschool program and more like a high-stakes weigh-in. The Hemphill Hornet Bass Club hosted a special guest who brought a lifetime of professional knowledge and one legendary 'giant' to the table: Bassmaster Elite Series pro Darold Gleason.
The Hemphill Little Dribblers basketball program began its season with practices at the end of November, followed by its first games on January 3. The season is scheduled to conclude on February 28, providing several weeks of competitive play and skill development for young athletes.
