After the flurry of bills filed on the deadline, we have the final number of bills filed and an accurate picture of the universe of topics we will work on. In total, both the House and Senate together filed 8,898 bill – almost 800 more bills than last session. Here are five things happening around your state:

Texas Senate Moves at Lightspeed to Pass Over Half of Top 40 Priorities

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick issued this statement March 24, 2025: “At the halfway point of the 89th regular legislative session, the Texas Senate is hard at work passing important legislation. At the beginning of the session in January, I laid out the most conservative and bold agenda in T e x a s Senate history. Just one week after the bill filing deadline, the T e x a s Senate had already passed 21 of the top 40 priority bills, including my priorities, the senators’ priorities, and the most important bills the voters asked me to pass. In the coming weeks, Senators will pass the remaining priority bills. All credit goes to the senators. They are working at lightspeed to deliver for the people of Texas.

Lion’s Club Talent Show...

What a production Saturday night! Sabine County is overflowing with talent. The annual event helps raise money for scholarships for our local kids. Event Coordinator and Lion Royalty, Mick Leach is pictured with the winners in the adult solo category. Gracie Leach earned 3rd with Over You. Kara Jones was first with Blue and Delaney Vickers 2nd with Sweet Child of Mine. Full coverage in our next edition.

The Gaines-Oliphint House, a two story, doublepen, hand hewed log house constructed in 1818, the earliest surviving Pre-Republic, Anglo American structure in Texas, will be open to the public from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday, April 5. The Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) Seth Hurin Bates Chapter and Ezekiel Cullen Chapter will conduct a ceremony to designate the house as a DRT Historic Site. The house is located at 100 N. Ensign Plant Sale

Horses and Hope...

Hemphill ISD has partnered with Edeska Barnes, Juvenile Probation Director out of Jasper that also serves Sabine, San Augustine and Newton, and Champion Oaks Ranch to serve our At-Risk Junior High and High School students by offering Equine Therapy every other Thursday at the Sabine County Youth Rodeo Arena. This program is made possible by donors just like you. We would like to thank those that have helped us get started: The Refuge Church of Milam, VFW_Post #10351, Auxiliary VFW Post 10351, Shelby Savings Bank, Hemphill Lios Club and BOM Bank. Baseball - Triston McGowan Texas Lutheran University was named Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Pitcher of the Week, his first of his career. The junior from Vidor led TLU on the mound in the series finale to clinch the sweep of Centenary on Feb. 16 when he retired 13 of the first 16 batters he faced,tossing his first career complete game and recording a career-best 11 strikeouts.
