Heartbreak in Hemphill: College Kayaker dies on Toldedo

On September 26, 2025, The Sabine County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office, in Louisiana, recovered the body of Peyton Hughes, 21 of Springfield, Kentucky from the Toledo Bend Reservoir, near the Alpine Marina. Hughes had been reported as missing since approximately 8pm on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, by his fishing coach.

Sabine County Commissioners Court Covers 4-H Updates, Community Events, and 2026 Budget Items

Hemphill, Texas – The Sabine County Commissioners Court met Monday, September 22, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. on the second floor of the Sabine County Courthouse. County Judge Daryl Melton opened the session with prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance before commissioners moved through a busy agenda that included youth programs, budget approvals, community events, and employee benefits.

The Sabine County Reporter has been authorized to announce the candidacies of the below named persons for the offices named subject to action in the March 3, 2026 Primary elections. The announcement fee (which must be paid in advance) includes a statement and photograph to run one time. Fees are $200. The name on the calendar runs each week until the election.

BINGO! It’s TIME! We will be having a bingo fundraiser Sunday, October 5th at the VFW Hall. Doors open at 1:00. Mark your calendars and come support the library!! We also have “SPLIT THE POT” tickets available here in the library or you can purchase them from any board member. The pot will benefit the library and the VFW. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. There is also a BASKET RAFFLE for the same price. It contains lots of goodies to make you BBQing or Grilling a huge success! It even comes with a 52qt. igloo cooler that was donated by Ritters!
