Kids, Hot Dogs, and Fireworks...

Body
After an hour of intense rain, the clouds cleared, the sun set, and parents brought the kids to watch another great fireworks show put on by the 6 Mile VFD. Once again, local business donations, such as Sportsman Cafe donating the hot dog buns, and money donated by individuals and fund raisers, allowed the VFD Auxiliary to provide hot dogs, chips, ice cream, watermelon, and drinks for the crowd before getting to the main event...the fireworks.

Girls State Attendees...

Body
On June 29, 2022, three of Hemphill High School students traveled to Seguin, Texas, to attend the 2022 Texas Bluebonnet Girls' State conference. The three citizens (what the American Legion Auxiliary calls attendees) are as pictured: Emily Shoemaker, Mrs. Lea Warren (the HHS Patriots' Club sponsor and Texas Girls' State coordinator for the American Legion Family 113 in Lufkin, Texas), Alana Dalbasco, and Destiny Stalls. All three girls have just completed their junior year in High School and will be attending Hemphill High School during the 2022-2023 year. All three were very excited to attend and learn more about the two-party system that the United States and the 50 states use as our form of government. All three girls are members of the Hemphill High School Patriots' Club which is sponsored by the American Legion Oscar P. Pate Lodge 197 located in Hemphill Texas. Not pictured is Commander Thomas Warren who accompanied the citizens to Seguin, Texas.

July...Those pesky Romans did it again

Body
Way back in 44 B.C., back when the calendar only had 10 months, July was known as Quintilis, the fifth month of the year according to the Roman calendar that began with March. When Augustus Caesar took office as Roman Emperor replacing his father, Julius Caesar, he used his influence with the Roman Senate to rename Quintilis to honor Julius, giving us July. Exposing a bit of a narcissistic personality, he also named August after himself. That’s not all he did, but this isn’t about him. Moving on…

Let them be little

At age two, my middle daughter could read! Was she truly gifted? Well, of course, all my girls are gifted, but she was using Environmental Print to read signs. Riding in the car, she was forever searching for the golden arches of McDonald’s. As soon as she saw the lights of the letter M she would exclaim with glee, “Nonald’s”! She was making the connection between the symbol and the delicious taste of salty french fries. She was reading.
