Mother knows best

Body

“Now, Neal, I want you to ride the school bus straight home today. Your dad wants you to start weeding the garden.” Those were the words of my mother that spring morning in 1944, words that eventually were providential. My mother and father both worked in town. Sometimes, after school, I would walk the three blocks downtown and just “mess around” until closing time. I would go into Dad’s office (he was the county clerk) and play with a typewriter. Then I would go into my mother’s beauty shop and see who was getting their hair fixed and listen to the gossip.

Fish fry…strangers become friends

Body
The annual Toledo Bend Lake Association membership drive filled up the Sabine Council on Ageing (SCOA) building Thursday evening, with approx. 75 members and friends on hand to visit and eat fried fish. According to TBLA President Gary Moore, this is always the largest meeting of the year, because it’s a fish fry, and because of the Association elections. This meeting was no different…fish first, then elections.

Community Conversations…West Sabine ISD Style

Body
A series of seven meeting over two days, each lasting two hours or better, hosted by West Sabine ISD took place last week in the Pineland Career Center. Partners for Rural Impact, a company from Kentucky, has spent considerable time to develop an outline of ideas and steps that any community can implement in order to further the success of its children. PRI Vice President Mike Hogg, a 1st generation college graduate, is proof, and a firm believer that it takes much more than an education to make a successful young adult. The support of the community, beginning with the immediate family, to the neighborhood, the Church, schools, businesses, to every member of the community, all have the capability of making a positive difference in the lives of children and young adults.
