Alisa Legae Barnett, 51, of Pineland, Texas passed away Sunday, February 19, 2023 at Baylor St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston, Texas. She was born in Nacogdoches, on October 26, 1971 to James Landy Barnett, Jr. and Reba Jean Clark Barnett. She graduated from Hemphill High School with the Class of 1990. She went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from East Texas Baptist University.

Black History Month – Jackie Robinson

Jackie Robinson, byname of Jack Roosevelt Robinson was born on January 31, 1919 in Cairo, Georgia and passed away on October 24, 1972. He was the first black baseball player to play in the American major leagues during the 20th century. On April 15, 1947, Robinson broke the decades old “colour line” of Major League Baseball when he appeared on the field for the National League Brooklyn Dodgers. He played as an infielder and outfielder for the Dodgers from 1947 through 1956.

A Popular Texas State Park Closes permanently

Fairfield Lake State Park, a popular Texas state park located 90 miles southeast of Dallas, will permanently close on February 28th after being open to the public for over 50 years, according to a Tuesday announcement from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD). Officials said they are heartbroken after receiving notice from Vistra Energy, the owner of the site, that the land lease for the park was terminated after the property was sold to Dallas-based mega-developer Todd Interests.

May election officially ordered for City of Pineland

The Pineland City Council met in special session February 16 with a light agenda in tow. First up was a citizen’s presentation brought by the Pineland Dixie League in regards to repairs needed on the baseball fields at the City Park. They discussed fixing the playing surface on both fields, the lighting on both fields and repairing batting cages. A ballpark figure of $1,500 was suggested to fix three light poles in particular.
