Body
Extreme heat is the most dangerous type of severe-weather event in the U.S., killing 12,000 people each year. Climate change is making extreme heat events more frequent, severe, and longer lasting. Moreover, extreme heat events are increasingly accompanied by power failures, increasing the number of people vulnerable to illness and death. But we can take action to prepare our loved ones, pets and communities for extreme heat events and related power outages. Learn what to do before, during, and after to help keep everyone safe and healthy. Hot cars can be deadly. Never leave children or pets in your vehicle. Distractions

The painful test was finally over and I was on my way home. I had only known; I had a doctor’s appointment. I didn’t know there was to be, such a test. So, I had thought it would be safe, to go alone. I wasn’t prepared for the needles they used in my feet and legs. Nor the shocks that came, with the needles. Just as I felt like, I was about to object; it was over.

Notes from History

Body
As we all know San Augustine County is experiencing a rush of activity from oil companies who are drilling for gas from the Haynesville Shale formation. It appears that our county was the object of intense interest for the same back in the 1890s. The following is a quote found in the Houston Daily Post in the summer of 1890: In The Oil Region: “San Augustine, Texas: Mr. John Mentean, of Chireno, is riding over the oil field here. He represents some Ohio and Pennsylvania oil men, and they seem to have great confidence in the oil and gas in this county.”

The Antelope

Body
I left Amarillo in 1968 to return to Hemphill, Texas to fish a couple of days with my friend Forest Ranger Lew Whitaker. Toledo Bend Reservoir was still filling up and the fishing was at its best. I had just bought a weird little car to drive along the sandy outback of The Canadian River. It was a “52 Volkswagen Beetle—29 HP Motor—no gas gauge. When the motor started sputtering, you turned a lever in the floorboard with your foot, connected to a one gallon auxiliary tank, and prayed the gallon would get you to a gas station I didn’t realize how little power the engine had and shifted to second gear to climb the steep hills between Amarillo and Bowie. But I finally made it to Hemphill and Lew and had two days of amazing fishing. On my way back home I drove to the top of a tall hill near Childress and spotted a beautiful antelope about seventy yards to my right. I’d never seen one before…only read that they were the 2nd fastest animals on earth….. and was surprised that he didn’t run off. He just stood stone still and stared.
