The Gaines-Oliphint House, a two story, doublepen, hand hewed log house constructed in 1818, the earliest surviving Pre-Republic, Anglo American structure in Texas, will be open to the public from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday, April 5. The Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) Seth Hurin Bates Chapter and Ezekiel Cullen Chapter will conduct a ceremony to designate the house as a DRT Historic Site. The house is located at 100 N. Ensign Drive on approximately two fenced acres within the Pendleton Harbor subdivision in Milam, on Highway 21 near Pendleton Bridge in Sabine County along the Texas-Louisiana border. The event is free, and everyone is encouraged to be part of Texas history!

After opening prayers and the pledge to the flag, the March 24th session began with the approval of minutes from the March 10th meeting, followed by reports from the treasurer, district clerk, and other officials. The Brookeland Wildcats played host Apple Springs March 25 to battle with the Eagles, and they would draw first blood in the second inning when Landen Smith would score on a sacrifice bunt from Jordon Brister and Cash Powell would score on a single from Cade Morgan. The contest was quiet until the fifth when the Cats struck again, this time using aggressive base running as both Powell and Morgan would score on a sacrifice bunt from Sammy Lundquist to make it 4-0.

When I was very young I heard people say that cats had nine lives. I did not know exactly what that meant but thought it was a lot of nonsense. However, as I have grown older, I have grown wiser. I realize that there is actually a lot more to this saying than at first meets the eye. So, where did this particular myth come from, and how true is it? You may be surprised to find out that it does have a very strong basis of truth, but not set in magic as we sometimes like to imagine, but in the law of physics.
