The storm that hit Houston on Thursday May 16 (which tracked from near Austin TX to Florida) has been officially classified as a rare southern USA 'DERECHO”. A derecho (pronounced similar to 'deh-REY-cho') is a widespread, long-lived wind storm that is associated with a band of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms. Although a derecho can produce destruction similar to the strength of tornadoes, the damage typically is directed in one direction along a relatively straight swath. As a result, the term 'straightline wind damage' sometimes is used to describe derecho damage. By definition, if the wind damage swath extends more than 240 miles. Sabine County lost some huge trees. We have a commissioner's race going on as we speak. It has been brought to my attention that some things were posted on Facebook and passed out to people in a letter that was about me and the way I have handled the position. I have some facts I would like you know about this. Numbers don't lie. When it comes to money you can see what I am going to include are public information and I did not make them up. They are kept up with by our county Treasure and her employes. And I would like to add to this they do a great job. I was sworn in January 2021 and that was a rainier day I might add. Creeks were flowing out of their banks and roads were flooded. So, I spent my first Holliday in office putting out barricades closing roads. Did not callout anyone I knew I was going to have to operate very efficiently to make budget that year. Moving on to the budgets. I made the budget that year and have the other years I have been in office. While we are on that subject, I will share the amount I started with.

Hemphill Little Theatre Announces Summer Theater Camp for Local Youth

Hemphill Little Theatre is excited to announce the launch of their first-ever summertheater camp for local youth. The camp, which will run from July 22nd to August 4th, will providechildren ages 8-18 with the opportunity to explore the world of theater and develop their acting skillsin a fun and supportive environment.

Lots of parents and kids enjoyed the beautiful Saturday at the Byrd's Nest RV Park & Cabins for the Sabine County Chamber of Commerce Kids Fish. The kids had a great day of cane pole fishing from the bank and brought 11 fish to the scales in the first 10 minutes of fishing. TPW Game Warden Ryan Svehla provided chum and lots of door prizes for the young anglers, and Midlake provided porta-potties. Dutch Oven The Toledo Bend Dutch Oven Cookers will be having our May DOG (Dutch Oven Gathering) on Saturday May 18th starting around 9:30 AM at Boles Field outside of Shelbyville, Texas. We meet on the third Saturday eight times a year.
