Lady Tigers advance over Big Sandy

Body
The Lady Tigers made the short trek south to Jasper to kick off their playoffs against the Big Sandy Wildcats in the bi-district round April 25. It was a nip and tuck affair throughout as neither team would seize the game by the throat and make it theirs. Big Sandy would go up 7-5 in the top of the sixth, but West Sabine made it 7-6 entering the final frame setting up a dramatic finish. After knotting it up at seven apiece, Madison Williamson had the hit of a lifetime as she ripped the game winning single up the middle for the 8-7 win in game one. Katie Lindow picked up the win in the circle while also cracking her team leading fifth HR, a majestic blast over the left center field wall in the first inning.

Memories and Musings

The spittoon has just about disappeared from the American scene. In the late 19th century United States, spittoons were a very common feature in pubs, brothels, saloons, hotels, stores, banks, court rooms, and other places where people gathered. I recall seeing spittoons scattered around in our Court House, and even in churches as a young lad.

Sunday afternoons are for The Arts. Bethany Dorsey and Anna Peel graced the piano and violin at Pineywoods Vineyard on the square and the atmosphere in this little corner of creation was immaculate. Come sit a spell and enjoy.

Down of Grandpa’s Farm...

HISD Pre-K presented a darling rendition of Down on Grandpa’s Farm in April and the animals and farmers were precioius. The musical was directed by LaDonna Clark, Meleesa Davis, Maggie Hadnot and Brittany Laurence. A special thanks to the show sponsors for the wonderful donations: Chanda Pattillo, Dee Harvey, Toledo Bend Nutrition, Tebo Creek Winery and Dr. Andrea Procella, DDS. Also, thank you the Principals Stephanie Harkness and Amanda Smith for their wonderful support.

And it’s a wrap! Thanks to a great cast: Cynthia Brister, Kristan Wood, Chris Piela, Lauren Rousseau and Sam Melton, the first Dinner show by the Hemphill Little Theatre was a success! 170 patrons attended this event held at the Feed Store Cafe who served great food and wine by Pineywoods Vineyard…the evening could not have been better. Also a big thank you to Rebecca Norwood music studio for her assistance with our sound system and Charles and Erin Clark for the pre-show entertainment.

My Five Cents

Here are five things happening around your state: 1. Maternal Medicaid coverage extended to 12 months Starting this month, Texas is extending coverage for postpartum care to 12 months for eligible Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) recipients. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission, which administers the programs, announced that anyone who is enrolled in Medicaid or CHIP who is pregnant or becomes pregnant is eligible for the extended coverage. Services covered by the programs include regular medical checkups, prescription drugs and vaccines, hospital care and services, X-rays and lab tests, vision and hearing care, specialty care, mental health care, and treatment for pre-existing conditions and special health needs. The agency projects approximately 137,000 women will benefit from 12-month postpartum coverage over the next year. Supporting women in the critical months after giving birth is essential to ensuring they can care for the families and themselves.
