Hello readers! This issue of Point/Counterpoint may be that rare occasion where you see both of us actually agreeing. The question is has this current generation lost its sense of patriotism? The answer to this is an unequivocal hell yes! With a few exceptions today’s generation is more concerned with the little device in their hands entertaining them than actually loving their country.

Hemphill City Council held a Special Meeting on Thursday, June 6th with only one item on the agenda. The Council approved Resolution #2024-008 Consenting to the extension of the Declaration of Disaster due to Severe Weather from April continuing into May executed by Mayor Stephen Crowell on May 31, 2024. This action gives the City 30 days to gather all the information on damages caused by the severe weather so they can then submit claims.

Changing of the Guard...

The VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) had a changing of the guard during its monthly meeting Monday, June 3rd. Frank Torres (pictured left) was installed as Commander of Post 10351. Curtis Buckner (pictured right) has fulfilled his tenure as Post Commander and now assumes the duties of Vice Commander. Under Curtis's leadership, the VFW has grown in membership of eligible veterans and has become increasingly more active in community programs. State statistics show that the eligible membership per county averages only 11%, while Sabine boasts a 79% membership. Thank you Curtis Buckner for your service to the country, the VFW and to the community! Commander Torres has plans to continue moving forward with the goals of the VFW. We welcome Commander Torres to the community, look forward to working with him and wish hi great success!

Region 7 Superintendent of the Year...

The Texas Association of School Boards has named West Sabine ISD Superintendent Dr. Carnelius Gilder the Region 7 Education Service Center Superintendent of the Year. That places Dr. Gilder in the running for the Texas Superintendent of the Year. TASB wrote 'This prestigious award recognizes Dr. Gilder's exceptional leadership, dedication to educational excellence, and unwavering commitment to the students, staff, and community of West Sabine ISD.' Coming up in August, the State Selection Committee will interview all regional winners and will select five state finalists. The Superintendent of the Year will be announced at the education entity's annual convention late this year.
