Veterans Day is a time to reflect on their sacrifice, their courage, and the freedoms they’ve helped protect. But have you ever wondered why Veterans Day is always observed on the 11th day of the 11th month — and even recognized at the 11th hour?

The 33rd Annual Milam Settlers Weekend Festival, anticipated to be the largest yet, will take place in Milam, Texas, on November 21 and 22 at El Camino Park. This popular two-day event offers free admission and features fun and activities for the whole family. The festivities kick off early on Friday morning, allowing eager shoppers a head start on holiday shopping. The Official Opening Ceremony begins promptly at 9:00 AM on Saturday, and will include a welcome from Judge Daryl Melton, the raising of the American flag by local veterans, and an anticipated announcement from Texas State Representative HD 11, Joanne Shofner.

With an incredible 27 years of volunteer service, Firefighter and Emergency Care Attendant (ECA) Michael Smith has been a trusted hand at the Moffat Volunteer Fire Department for nearly three decades.

Carmen Gonzalez, a 2025 graduate of Hemphill High School, has completed basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. She is currently continuing her education and skills development at Sheppard Air Force Base, where she is undergoing technical training to become an aircraft armaments specialist.
