82 Years Of Selective Service Obligations, Renewed?

Body
“You are hereby ordered to report for induction…” In the history of the U.S. Postal Service, has there ever been a more dreaded phrase to mail received? Millions of young American men have read this notice, and for the most part, they stepped up and answered the call for service. The military draft system has been used as needed since America was founded, first by local and state militias, later by the Federal government to fill the ranks as needed.

Let them be Little

Body
Tired words. In the mornings, when I ask each child how they are feeling today, I generally get the answer “good”. Lately, a few have answered with the words wonderful or great. Today, I introduced a picture of a sleeping cat next to the word, good. I explained the cat was tired from everyone playing with him all day every day. The cat’s name is Good. Poor Good. I then showed the students a list of other words that are cousins of Good: Remarkable, Fantastic, Dazzling, Splendid, Awesome and Spectacular. We practiced saying them with emphasis. Then, I asked each child how he/she was today. Laughter was everywhere as new words were expressed with great emphasis!

Blue Star Mothers banquet to be held

Body
Shortly after World War I the Gold Star Mothers Club was formed in the United States to provide support for mothers that lost sons or daughters in the war. The name came from the custom of families of servicemen hanging a banner called a Service Flag in the window of their homes. The Service Flag had a star for each family member in the military. Living servicemen were represented by a blue star, and those who had lost their lives were represented by a gold star. On the last Sunday of September, Gold Star Mother’s Day is observed in the U.S. in their honor.

Two teams - One County

Body
Friday night, the Hemphill Hornets will host the West Sabine Tigers in everyone’s favorite football game of the season. Family, friends and an entire county come together to support these teams and it’s always a great show. Houses may be divided, but it’s all in good fun. Kick-off will be at Hornet Stadium at 7 p.m. The tradition was established in 1968 and we are looking for historical details on the community game.
