Pre K Perfection...

Body
Hemphill ISD hosted their Meet the Teacher on Thursday and all campuses were buzzing with hive excitement. We found our favorite early educator, Meleesa Davis, author of Let them be Little in pink perfection with lemonade and a smile. Every little Pre-K darling that stopped by was greeted and treated with a “Sip, Sip, HOORAY!” The cuteness overload had us wishing we were back in elementary!

Purple Heart ...

Body
The Purple Heart was created by General George Washington, first President of the United States, in 1782, then called a Badge of Merit. It was awarded to soldiers who performed heroic and notable actions; Washington himself awarded only three. The Badge of Merit became the Purple Heart in 1932, given to honor those wounded in combat and for commendable actions, and in 1944, it was decided it would be specifically awarded to those who were wounded or killed in action. Purple Heart Day has been observed since 2014. It is a day to honor, remember and show gratitude for those who have gone above and beyond in the line of duty and was celebrated Sunday, Aug. 7.

Let them be Little

Body
On a scorching hot day this summer, I sat in Sabean’s and enjoyed my favorite cool drink, Hibiscus Tea, half sweet, half unsweet. In the door came a little girl with wispy blond hair, sandals on her feet and the brightest red lipstick (which had been selfapplied) on her tiny bow mouth. Her walk/dance around the shop spoke volumes about this child. Creative, independent, curious, imaginative, proud, self-reliant, and magical were all words that popped in my head. As a pre-k teacher, I asked if she was going to prek this year. She nodded and I began thinking of all the ways I could encourage her and enjoy being her teacher. Sadly, for me, she lives in another state far away. It is not likely I will ever see her again in person; but I see her every day in my mind as I strive to nurture, not stifle a child’s imagination.

Hemphill VFW to show support for families of servicemen and women now serving

Body
Shortly after World War I the Gold Star Mothers Club was formed in the United States to provide support for mothers that lost sons or daughters in the war. The name came from the custom of families of servicemen hanging a banner called a Service Flag in the window of their homes. The Service Flag had a star for each family member in the military. Living servicemen were represented by a blue star, and those who had lost their lives were represented by a gold star. On the last Sunday of September, Gold Star Mother’s Day is observed in the U.S. in their honor.

There's always room for bees...

Body
Experienced bee keeper Sam Franklin (2nd from left) demonstrating one method of fumigating a bee hive to prevent hive beetles. Novice bee keeper John Jenkins (left) is joined by Margie and Thomas Fitch who visited from Shreveport to explore the hobby of bee keeping. The first Monday of the month will find our local bee keepers, and anyone interested in bee keeping, meeting in the Sabine County Chamber of Commerce office. Monday evening found more than a dozen experienced bee keepers, a couple new keepers, and a couple who drove from Shreveport looking for advice on how to get started. There are no dues and no elected officers, just a room full of people more than willing to answer questions and share their knowledge about an enjoyable hobby that can make some money if you choose to go that route.
