Powerlifing in Pineland has been super successful this season. Last week both the varsity boys and girls won the meet hosted by West Sabine. The boys have won every meet and the girls have won the last 3. Thank you to all the workers who helped host the meet.

My Five Cents

Body
Super Bowl LVII was this weekend and, for the first time in history, both starting quarterbacks are from the great state of Texas. Whichever team you support, it will be a win for the Lone Star State!

The Perils of Piano Playing

Body
My wife, Clara, has been playing the piano and organ for many years. She is quite good at it as she has been invited to play music for numerous weddings and funerals over the years. However, there is a side to playing the keyboard that is quite dangerous. One would think that sitting at a piano and playing would be about the safest thing a person could do. This is not the case with Clara, as you will soon detect.

Uncle Travis

Body
I was six years old when I drank my first “sodie water”. As I walked past Jess and Bob’s Café in Center, my Uncle Travis Watson (partowner of the Café) stopped me and asked, “Henry, do you want a sodie water?” It was my first one ever and my reach into the icy water produced a powerful, eyewatering bottle of 7-Up. After a short coughing spell, I thanked my Uncle and ran home to tell Mother.

Do Trees Have Value?

Body
Dish washing is a chore; that I find satisfying. I get a job done and a chance to gaze out the window, without wasting time. I have a dishwasher; but would rather do them, by hand. I enjoy watching the squirrels and birds, eat at the feeders. Admiring the trees that grow out there and the day itself, whether rainy or sunshiny, is in my thoughts. There are no natural oils left in my hands. Therefore, I have to wear rubber gloves for this task. Still, I don’t mind it, at all. (There are other tasks that I do mind.)

WS Lady Tigers open district with a win over Dogs of Corrigan-Camden

Body
Both Tiger squads saw action before the Christmas break this past week as the Tigers hosted the Groveton Indians while the Lady Tigers opened up district play with Corrigan Camden. The ladies went first and promptly raced out to a 21-2 lead after the first quarter and used suffocating defense to cruise to a 58-12 victory. Makensy Wilson led the Lady Tigers with a game high 21, while Presslie Murphy and Makenna Roberts each chipped in 11 and eight points, respectively.

Hornets win district opener over Eagles

Body
Newton kept it close for the 1st quarter, then the Hornets quick hands defense began to assert itself, opening up a 14 point lead by halftime before cruising to a 76-54 win in their District play opener. The Eagles had no answer for the speed on defense and the aggressive, attack the basket offense, fueled by Papa Whites 20 points, Kam Arringtons 11, and Jay Blakes 8, until a look at the scorebook that showed Tookie Williams with a 'quiet' game high 29! It was easy to be caught up watching his defensive play, and enjoying the acrobatics of White and Blake driving through the Eagle defense, while overlooking the sharpshooting Williams with the hot hand in the 2nd half, 11 points in the 3rd quarter, 9 more in the 4th.
