Texas sees an increase in traffic deaths involving distracted driving

Distracted driving deaths in Texas increased 17% in 2021 compared to 2020, claiming the lives of 431 people and seriously injuring another 2,934. In light of these grim statistics, TxDOT is conducting its annual Talk. Text. Crash. campaign during National Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April to urge Texans to keep their heads up, put their phones down and just drive.

Brookeland ISD announces top graduates for Class of 2022

Paige Rogers is the Brookeland High School valedictorian. Her parents are Courtney and Jordan Downs.Paige is a member of NHS, art club, cheerleading, cross country team, and track. She participated in the regional cross country meet. She was the captain of the cheerleading squad. She will attend Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the fall and major in biomedical sciences.

This week is Small Business appreciation week, so we thought we would look into some of the issues and challenges that small businesses face. Lots of people believe it would be nice to enjoy the perks (freedom, financial, autonomy) of owning their own business, but being a business owner today is anything but a walk in the park. A host of forces, local, national and global, challenge business owners to be resourceful or close up shop. Here are a few of those challenges business owners face, and some ideas to overcome them.

Augustus Dorris, (pictured left)Valedictorian of Brookeland Junior High School, is the son of Liz Dorris and JW Dorris. Augustus (Gus) Dorris is a 2X state qualifier in team roping and a reserve champion header for 2022. He is active in cowboying, basketball, baseball, and track. Gus is a member of the Jasper County Cowboy Church. Next in line is Carson Bishop, Salutatorian of Brookeland Junior High School. His parents are Brent and Shannel Bishop.Carson is a state qualifier in chute dogging and team roping. He is a reserve champion in team roping heeler and chute dogging. He is a member of the Brookeland fishing, track, basketball, and baseball team. Congratulations to these fine young men who are exemplary in and out of the classroom.

Underpaid, underutilized, underappreciated: teacher history

For a profession that dates back to Confucious, the year 561 B.C., it took Eleanor Roosevelt convincing then President Theodore Roosevelt that teachers deserved to have a specific day designated for their appreciation. Eleanors’ intervention in Congress, in 1953, laid the groundwork, but, as with most things in Government, it wasn’t until 1980 when the day became official. Back then it was celebrated on March 7, until it was moved in 1984 after the National PTA got involved. They lobbied to move the Appreciation to May, and succeeded in changing the day to a week.

The Sabine County Republican party will have its monthly meeting on Thursday, May 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce office in Hemphill. Featured guest will be Konni Burton. Burton is founder and CEO of The Texan, a statewide news outlet focused on the stories that matter most to Texans and their pocketbook. Previously, she was a grassroots activist who worked on numerous campaigns for local, state and federal races. Konni then went on to run for office and was elected in 2014 to serve Tarrant County’s Senate District 10 in Austin. Her experience as a grassroots activist, elected official, and taxpaying citizen provides a unique and valuable perspective on the political landscape in Texas.
