My hummers needed their feeders cleaned and refilled, again. But, I couldn’t reach them. My son, Jonny and his wife, Sherry were here. I asked them to help me, with this problem. One of them said, “Why don’t you just lower the feeders?” Wow! I hadn’t thought about that. Why didn’t I? So they helped lower the two pretty red, glass feeders. My problem was solved. I was usually stung by ants, when I took the feeders down. There were always dozens of them, on these containers. One day I realized that gloves would fix that problem. So my rubber gloves became a guard, from the pain of the fiery stings. I haven’t had that problem since.

On a scorching hot day this summer, I sat in Sabean’s and enjoyed my favorite cool drink, Hibiscus Tea, half sweet, half unsweet. In the door came a little girl with wispy blond hair, sandals on her feet and the brightest red lipstick (which had been selfapplied) on her tiny bow mouth. Her walk/dance around the shop spoke volumes about this child. Creative, independent, curious, imaginative, proud, self-reliant, and magical were all words that popped in my head. As a pre-k teacher, I asked if she was going to prek this year. She nodded and I began thinking of all the ways I could encourage her and enjoy being her teacher. Sadly, for me, she lives in another state far away. It is not likely I will ever see her again in person; but I see her every day in my mind as I strive to nurture, not stifle a child’s imagination.
