Hemphill VFW to show support for families of servicemen and women now serving

Body
Shortly after World War I the Gold Star Mothers Club was formed in the United States to provide support for mothers that lost sons or daughters in the war. The name came from the custom of families of servicemen hanging a banner called a Service Flag in the window of their homes. The Service Flag had a star for each family member in the military. Living servicemen were represented by a blue star, and those who had lost their lives were represented by a gold star. On the last Sunday of September, Gold Star Mother’s Day is observed in the U.S. in their honor.

Many Bass Club’s August Results

Body
The Many Bass Club’s August Tournament of 2022 took place on the weekend of August 9 on Toledo Bend. The weather was extremely hot with temperatures pushing 100 degrees. We had high bright skies on Saturday with moderate winds. The water temperatures were in the upper 80’s. The fishing was very tough with only two limits of five fish weighed in by the ten-angler field. Both of those limits were caught during the day on Saturday in relatively shallow water from two to ten feet deep. Several anglers fished Friday night with little success although the largest fish of the tournament was caught Friday night.

In a class of their very own

by Bill Dodson Sabine County Reporter It may be just a coincidence, but what started out as a bit of research for a “Women In Baseball Week” article began turning up a lot of facts about women in more important things than baseball. As impressive as all that information is, it’s also a little sad since it draws attention to how society has treated females over the years, and how women still have to work harder than men for the same reward.

Bee Keeping Class...Information Overload

Body
Two facts before we begin.. .Honey is the perfect food, and if stored in a sealed container, kept from outside contamination by a water source, honey will remain edible forever. The oldest honey ever found was in Georgia (the country, not the state). In 2003 during the excavation of a gravesite, several ceramic jars containing several types of honey were located and later dated as being over 5,500 years old. So we decided to look into the much younger honey production in Sabine County, which led me to the monthly meeting of the Sabine County Beekeepers.

Restoration...

Body
Who doesn’t love a good restoration story? Pinewoods Vineyard recently purchased this property on the Hemphill square. The latest storefront was for PRIM’Z Women’s Wear, but if those walls could talk, there would be plenty of stories of days gone by. Dr. Mann once had his dentist office on the second floor and when we stopped by to capture some before photos, his name was still pretty perfect on the door. An old X-ray machine also still stood inside the office. Now owners Chris and Jordan Cox have begun the demolition phase of their project. Walls are coming down and you are not going to want to miss the revival taking place here in Sabine. Visit our website for more photos.
