Happy 225th Birthday to Jane Long - Mother of Texas?

On July 23, 225 years ago, hundreds of miles from Texas, one of the least known influential figures in Texas history was born. Because of one event she named herself “The Mother of Texas,” not knowing that she was mistaken. Still, Jane Long’s journey from Maryland to Natchez, Mississippi to Alexandria, Louisiana to Nacogdoches, Texas, to the Bolivar Peninsula, to San Antonio may have earned her the right to wear that title.

VFW donates school supplies to the Helping Hands

Pictured above front and center is Tammy Hare of the Helping Hands receiving $474 worth of much needed school supplies from the VFW Post 10351. VFW members (from L-R) in attendance are Phylis Buckner, Carol Waller, Jim Waller, Curtis Buckner, Christine Johnston, Sherry Thibodeaux, and Wanda Hand. Helping Hands is another local organization that helps so many people in the area.

PACT Act available

Thanks to the PACT Act, millions of Veterans who were exposed to burn pits, Agent Orange, and other toxic substances are now eligible for VA health care and benefits. While there is no deadline to apply for PACT Actrelated benefits, there is urgency.

Angelina College Recieves Title V Grant

Angelina College officials on Thursday gathered in recognition of the nearly $3 million Title V grant awarded by the U. S. Department of Education. In 2022, AC was one of just 78 higher education institutions selected as a Title V recipient. According to the Title V page on the Angelina College web site, the Title V grant lists two major components: 1) Establish new technology programs for in-demand occupations, and 2) Develop and strengthen support services.

While no one is immune from the devastation of a natural disaster, preparing before a storm hits is key to keeping everyone in your family—including your pets—safe. “What’s good for us is good for our pets,” said Kris Kiser, President of the TurfMutt Foundation, an environment education and stewardship program, and President and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), an international trade association representing manufacturers and suppliers of power equipment, small engines and battery power, utility and personal transport vehicles, and golf cars.

Sabine County Firefighters have had a busy week and an even busier summer. From brush fires to structure-destroying devastation, every part of the county has been affected. Monday morning at 9:35 a.m., members of Commissioners Court voted to place the county under burn ban, effective immediately. Check out our website for more photos.
