I may have been six years old when I met Eli, and knew we were Friends before knowing her name. She lived next door. I saw her sitting on the porch swing; we did not say much because she could not and I did not know how. We sat together and I showed her my drawings. She smiled, looked very closely at each page, and touched them with her slender fingers. I remember her voice as a whisper. I looked to see if she was there, and felt saddened when the swing was empty.
