The Perils of Painting

Body
All occupations have their perils, those little things that seem to hound one into wishing they did something else. My father, Cecil, was a painting contractor with his father, Felix, until he entered county politics in 1939. Dad worked with his younger brother, Marvin, and the three of them painted and hung wallpaper in most of the houses in San Augustine and surrounding communities.

Don’t Touch a Dead Man’s Toe

Body
In 1957, I became the Student Pastor of The Liberty Hill Baptist Church of San Augustine, Texas. One of the members, Mrs. Maud Bucklew, often invited me to eat lunch with her when I drove down to San Augustine on Saturdays. Maud lived a couple of miles from Bland Lake down a hot unpaved road. As I was flying along to her house one Saturday, I spotted what seemed to be a dead barefooted man slumped over a pile of clay. Jumping out of the car, I clawed my way up the bank and by stretching out my arm, touched one of his big toes.

Seen At The Cross

Body
Sadly many have the idea that because everyone sins, “one little sin won’t hurt.” But, we need to learn to view sin as God does. It is filth (Revelation 3:4). It is the dirt of the world (James 1:27). It is described by the Lord like a muddy hog pen (Luke 15). Look at the graphic picture which God paints of one who has been saved going back into the world of sin. “For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein and overcome, the last state has become worse with them than the first. For it were better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered unto them. It has happened to them according to the true proverb, the dog turning to it’s own vomit again, and the sow that had washed to it’s wallowing in the mire” (@ Peter 2:20-22). When we come to see sin like that, when we can see it as God sees it, we can begin to truly appreciate the cross which frees us from the guilt and practice of sin.

What’s In Your Cup?

Body
My friend had dropped by my house. She had been out running errands and some of them were, for me. Now, she is here for coffee. I chose a pretty cup for her. A white one with metallic gold polka dots and the words, “She is clothed with Strength & Dignity Prov. 31:25.” It was a gift from another friend.

The First Time I Used A Phone

Body
I was in the fourth Grade when I heard a phone ringing in Principal Oran Wheeler’s office one day.. Seeing no one was around, I did something I’d never done. Since we didn’t have a phone ---and I had never used one---I (with fear and trembling) picked it up and did what I’d seen others do. I said “Hello”. When a lady asked me to get Principal Wheeler to the phone, I was a Paul Revere racing down the hall with the good news.

The Lost Weekend

Body
Character actor Ned Beatty’s first film was released in 1972, and was entitled “Deliverance”. It was the story of four male friends from Georgia who went on a weekend outing of boating and fishing in the mountains, and encountered trouble with mountain people.

My First Ice Cream

Body
I woke up at 2:00 this morning and recalled something that happened to me years ago…. in Center, Texas. My earliest life memories began when I was three years old and I ate my first ice cream on June 19th of that year. My parents made home-made ice cream on that day every year to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Mother was 15 years old and Daddy was 20 when Daddy eloped with her, drove to Mansfield, La. and got married by lying about her age. And every year…without fail… on June 19th, they got us kids together to make ice cream.
