Faith

My back porch had been needing some attention for several weeks. I had been having some health problems. So, I had let it go. Today, I had my outside broom out and I tackled the job. There were spider webs on the wall and the ceiling. There were leaves all over the floor. It seems that it’s always Fall, here. The leaves never stop falling. First, I swept down the spider webs. Then, I donned one of those hated masks. Pollen had covered all of the leaves and the floor. I didn’t want to stir up my allergies. So, I wore it. My back began to hurt from bending over. But, I kept at it. Soon, I was finished. There! Much better!

I woke up to total darkness. I could tell I was in my bed. But, where were the lights, that I always leave on? And why wasn’t the security light burning? Then, I remembered. I had gotten a notice, from the electricity company, the day before. They were going, to be doing some work and the power would be off for two hours. My flashlight was beside my bed. Nothing to worry about. So, I just went back to sleep.

After some months of intense reflection, I have come to the conclusion that it is time for my insanity to retire. The evidence before me is so overwhelming that I'm not sure I have any other choice. And believe me, I have looked.

The phone rang and I answered. It was one of those recording sounding voices.

Bouncing back from weeks of being sick is not as easy as it used to be when I was younger. I guess that's the cost of getting old.

It was Wednesday. That meant church that night. I was almost ready. I just had to fix my hair. That’s when the storm hit. I decided, I better do my hair, now. Just in case the electricity went off. Just as I began, the lights went blink, blink and then nothing. I wish, I had started a bit sooner.

For some reason, the other week I thought of my maternal grandfather, after whom I was named. He had a farm up in the hills of Pennsylvania, and when I would visit, my cousins and I would get together and make fun of old grandpa.
