Sabine County Master Gardener’s present June garden tasks

Body
We have been blessed with recent rains that have helped kick start our gardens. Unfortunately, we don’t know how long that will last. If you have to supplement your garden by watering, know that it is better to water in the early morning versus the evening and avoid watering during the heat of the day. By watering in the morning, any moisture that splashed on your leaves has a chance to dry out in the sun. Wet leaves=mildew. The goal is one inch of water per week. It is best to water deeply once a week to encourage your roots to go deeper versus frequent shallow watering. Drip irrigation is the best method followed by sprinklers and hand watering.
