Funding opportunities for prescribed burning available to Texas landowners

Texas A&M Forest Service is accepting applications for grants to help Texas landowners offset the cost of prescribed fire. More than $500,000 in grant funds are available for eligible landowners conducting prescribed burns on their property by certified and insured prescribed burn managers.

774 Texas laws are now in effect as of September 1

Friday marked the start of a slew of new Texas laws, including requirements of an armed officer at every school, variable speed limits and tax exemptions for diapers. There are 774 laws that go into effect Sept. 1 following the 88th legislative session that concluded in May. While there’s no uniform start date for new state laws, the first of September is common for many. Here are some of the bills that go into effect: School Safety Legeslation: House Bill 3 is a wideranging school safety bill that requires districts to have at least one armed officer at each school during the day. Some school districts in North Texas are struggling to meet the requirement. It also requires mental health training for educators who regularly interact with students to help them recognize students who may pose a risk to school safety. Under the new law, the Texas Education Agency must establish an office of school safety and security. The law was passed after the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde.

The star on the Texas flag somehow seems to shine a little brighter every year as more and more people move to Texas to find a thriving economy and a better quality of life. While that growth is wonderful to see, it does bring challenges to our transportation system.

Stem Camp...

These Hemphill students attended Stephen F. Austin STEM camp over the summer and met up with Rose, a former HHS student that was working the camp as a college intern. Special thanks to the grant program that allowed these kiddos to stay at the week-long camp designed for those interested in fields of science, technology, engineering and math. PACT Act Deadline: Health Care Enrollment for Veterans

Until 11:59 p.m. Sept. 30, 2023, Veterans who deployed to a combat zone, never enrolled in VA health care and left the military between Sept. 11, 2001, and Oct. 1, 2013, are eligible to enroll directly in VA health care through the PACT Act. This special enrollment period gives Veterans who served in Iraq, Afghanistan and other combat zones an opportunity to enroll directly in VA health care without first applying for disability compensation benefits.
