Hemphill VFW to show support for families of servicemen and women now serving

Body
Shortly after World War I the Gold Star Mothers Club was formed in the United States to provide support for mothers that lost sons or daughters in the war. The name came from the custom of families of servicemen hanging a banner called a Service Flag in the window of their homes. The Service Flag had a star for each family member in the military. Living servicemen were represented by a blue star, and those who had lost their lives were represented by a gold star. On the last Sunday of September, Gold Star Mother’s Day is observed in the U.S. in their honor.

This in effect brought the war with Japan to an end on August 14, 1945, as Japanese forces surrendered. But President Truman declared September 2, 1945, as Victory over Japan Day. This is because the official surrender documents were signed aboard the USS Missouri, where it was anchored in Tokyo Bay on that date.

County Agent’s Report

Late summer is an opportune time in East Texas to start propagating your most favorite woody plants. Cuttings are an effective, cheap way to propagate many woody plants such as trees, shrubs, and roses. Not all will propagate easily, but it is always a learning experience. Any plant with woody stem might be propagated through cuttings, but some grow roots easier than others, usually depending on how susceptible they are to rotting funguses. For the home gardener, the simplest type of propagation is rooting a cutting in either sterile rooting medium or water. The plants that have rooted best for me in water were angel-wing begonia, spider plant, coleus, mint, and hydrangeas. It is important to note that you should change the water frequently to keep it from becoming stagnant, and you should be aware that some plants rooted in water do not perform as well once transplanted in soil.

Biden’s Student Loan Forgiveness Lacks Constitutional Muster

Body
“People think the President of the United States has the power for debt forgiveness. He does not. He can postpone, he can delay, but he does not have that power. That would has (sic) to be an act of Congress.” These are the words of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi during a July 2021 press conference. Following President Biden’s student loan forgiveness announcement on August 24, Pelosi issued a statement with a completely different tune. “President Biden’s bold action is a strong step in Democrats’ fight to expand access to higher education and empower every American to reach fulfillment.” There may be many motives behind the Speaker’s positional shift on the issue, but a strict adherence to the Constitution was not one of them.

Brookeland meet the teacher...

Body
Brookeland ISD 'Meet The Teacher' was a huge success on Friday. Junior High Math teacher Charlotte Donahoe welcomed Leah Hoyt and Evan Knight, two of her new students. School administrators were at the front door to greet the students and parents before turning them over to the Cheerleading Squad who served as escorts, taking the visitors to their destination. The 4th/5th grade teachers were some of the most sought out during the first hour as they prepared for the first day of school on Monday, the 22nd.

The Coming Social Credit System and How It Will Affect US

Body
Last Tuesday, President Biden officially signed into law the Inflation Reduction Act. Before the ink could dry on the paper, Washington elites and media figures were publicly admitting the law would not stop inflation. Even Senator Manchin, who was a key vote for the bill’s passage, conceded as much to a reporter after the signing ceremony. “Why would it?” he stated. “Well, immediately it’s not. We never said anything happened immediately, like today, it’s turn the switch on and off.” Senator Manchin’s “immediately” comment is itself misleading. The Congressional Budget Office has estimated the law will increase deficit spending across nearly every appropriations category of the bill and may increase inflation in the law’s first year of enforcement. None of this should come as a surprise to anyone who reads this column. This act was never about inflation. It is the cornerstone in the establishment of America’s social credit system.
