The Great Sam Rayburn Cardboard Boat Regatta looking for Sponsors

The second annual Sam Rayburn Cardboard Boat Regatta is set for Labor Day weekend September 2nd at Jackson Hill Park and Marina. Sponsor boats are available for a $200 donation or you can be a cosponsor for $100. Everyone who wants to build and race their own boat will pay a $25 entry fee and spectators will pay a $5.00 event entry fee that will be donated to our local Sam Rayburn Lake Area Toys for Tots campaign. If you would like to have a little help getting started you can come down Jackson Hill every Saturday in August to attend a boat building workshop. Cardboard donated by Haley's Furniture, Conns Appliance and Lone Star feed along with glue and tape will be available for those who would like to make the basic hull and then take it home to add your special touches and decorations. There will be a best of show and race winner who will receive cash prizes and trophies.

Nunsense to star Wood

Kristan Wood owns Into the Woods Graphic Design company located in Pineland, TX. Besides Theatre, one of her passions is graphic design and art displays in a variety of mediums. If you have seen the murals on the side of the Pineywood Vineyard building: the 'Welcome to Hemphill, Cow and Deer”, are her creations. Photography is another one of my favorite pastimes.She is so blessed to have my husband Daniel, and her daughters Ryia and A’laura, who not only support me but love to get involved in her projects. Kristan is not new to the Hemphill Little Theatre as she has performed in the 'Odd Couple Female Version'& 'Spitfire Grill' just to name a few shows.

Sabine Trail Runs...

Texas Outlaw Running is hosting a 5K, 10K, 25K, and 50K trail run held in Sabine National Forest in the piney woods on the border of Texas & Louisiana. Featuring a singletrack dirt trail with beautiful scenery, the race follows an out & back course beginning and ending at the Lakeview Recreation Area. Register online.

Lightning Starts Indian Mounds Wilderness Fire

The Hogpen Indian Mounds Fire was started by lightning and discovered July 24 by USFS fire patrol who spotted the smoke plume. Angelina-Sabine Forest Management Officer (FMO) Joey Silva and Assistant (AFMO) Matt Laricos scouted the area and located the origin of the fire. It currently threatens no homes or improved property. Smoke in the area may increase as time goes on but the fire is being closely monitored and suppression operations are ongoing to contain the fire.

Smokey Bear Poster Contest Announced

Students from Kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to participate in a Smokey Bear Poster contest to help celebrate his 80th birthday. Students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of wildfire prevention through their original artwork of Smokey Bear. Independent school districts, homeschools, youth programs, scout groups and other informal education or youth organizations can submit entries from school-aged children.

Pineland Day Kick-off Banquet
