'And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labor, it is the gift of God.' Ecclesiastes 3:13 When I was a college ministerial student, I was invited to preach at the Neuville Baptist Church near Center, Texas. It was a 'Half-time Church' meeting on the first and third Sundays of each month. I was already preaching on the second and fourth Sundays at the Patroon Baptist Church, another 'Half-Time Church'. So these two half-time churches now had me…a half-grown Baptist preacher…. preaching for them.

I may have been six years old when I met Eli, and knew we were Friends before knowing her name. She lived next door. I saw her sitting on the porch swing; we did not say much because she could not and I did not know how. We sat together and I showed her my drawings. She smiled, looked very closely at each page, and touched them with her slender fingers. I remember her voice as a whisper. I looked to see if she was there, and felt saddened when the swing was empty.

Thankfulness!

by Louise Bishop There would be no coffee or hot breakfast, for me, this morning. My electricity had been off, since a little after eight last night. I know there are a lot of other people, that are in the same situation. Thanks to the storm we had, yesterday. I wondered if all of those workers out there, had had any coffee or any food? I prayed for them last night, before I went to sleep. I always do. I do so appreciate their labor, in stormy, bad weather. They are doing their job. Sometimes, a dangerous one. But, it means a lot to us; that have no power. (It was restored later that morning. ) I thought about my front porch and how much I enjoy sitting out there. I assumed there would be no potted plants out there, this year. I only had one; I had managed to keep alive. It had been in the house.

“If anyone is ashamed of me, I will be ashamed of Him when I come into my kingdom”…. Luke 9:26 Every day the name of Jesus becomes a “rock of offense” to more and more Americans. In an effort to offend no one , timid church members (especially politicians) are using a new term to escape the scorn of the “politically correct”. Instead of “I’m a Christian”, it’s now, “I’m a person of faith”. This brings no criticism from those who don’t like the name of Jesus.

The Sabine County Reporter was founded in 1883, just four years after Will Rogers was born. Who was he, right? Both Mom and Dad were part Cherokee. He started out as a cowhand and became a stage and silent movie star, plus a comedian and homespun philosopher! He was a syndicate writer of over 3600 newspaper columns! He said he never met a man he didn’t like and a stranger was just a Friend he had not met! I am always thrilled to read one “riveting”quote. He inspired me to paint his portrait with this quote: “I read about eight papers a day. When I’m in a town with only one paper, I read it eight times.” He didn’t want to miss anything!

Once upon a time begins on this page today. In the 626 lines long poem entitled The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner, Samuel Coleridge , an English poet, tells the tale the Mariner must tell to someone he recognizes to be in need to hear the burden of sin’s effect… until transformed by a gush of love.
