Honoring Black History - Who Were the Buffalo Soldiers?

By 1880, the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments had minimized Indian resistance in Texas and the 9th Cavalry was ordered to Indian Territory in modern-day Oklahoma, ironically to prevent white settlers from illegally settling on Indian land. The 10th Cavalry continued to keep the Apache in check until the early 1890s when they relocated to Montana to round up the Cree.

Dr. Carnelius Gilder will be recognized for his selection as a 2023 Top 50 Black Professionals & Entrepreneurs in Texas. The award ceremony and celebration will be held in Houston Feb. 18. For more information visit d-mars.com. Dr. Gilder is superintendent for West Sabine ISD. A favored son of Pineland, he completed his doctorate at Sam Houston State and returned to his hometown- on mission- to serve.

There's a new game in town and it's called Pickleball. That's right. Pickle - as in those little frozen cups of pickle juice you can buy for a quarter at a game. No where else in the world have I been able to find frozen pickle juice as a summertime treat. Someone market this!

On January 25, 1839 the official flag of Texas was adopted by the Third Congress of the Republic of Texas. It specified the look of the iconic Lone Star Flag that we know and love today. The colors were chosen to signify certain attributes: red for courage, white for purity and liberty, and blue for loyalty. The Texas flag is the only flag of an American state that previously served as a flag for an independent country.
