Shirley Mae Erwin Donnell was born on January 21, 1934, in Claude, to Frank Erwin and Violet Triplett Erwin. She passed away on March 29, 2026, in Hemphill, at the age of 91.

A cherished member of the community, Shirley spent much of her life in Canyon, where she worked diligently as a legal secretary before retiring. She earned a bachelor’s degree from West Texas A&M University and was well known for her faith, intelligence, professionalism, and strong work ethic.

Shirley shared 59 wonderful years of marriage with her beloved husband, Charles “Pete” Donnell, who preceded her in death. Their life together was filled with love and adventure, especially during their retirement years when they traveled extensively and enjoyed time in Eagle Nest, New Mexico, and Port Isabel, Texas. Eventually, they made their home in the Pendleton Harbor Subdivision in Sabine County, where Shirley became an active and valued member of the community. She especially enjoyed fishing on Toledo Bend, contributing to subdivision committees, and sharing many joyful games of Farkel with friends.

Shirley is lovingly remembered by her nieces, Stacy Fore and Kelli Aaron; nephews, Keith Davis, Kirk Davis, and Jeff Davis; her great-niece, Tracy Davis; and their families, along with many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Pete” Donnell; her daughter, Dale Ann Donnell; her brother, Leo Erwin; and her sister, Betty Davis, nephews, Jack Davis, Kenneth Davis, and Jerre Davis.

Shirley’s life was defined by her devotion to God, her family, her deep sense of community, and her genuine joy in living. She will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.

Arrangements are under the care of Starr Funeral Home. The family suggests memorials be made to Heart to Heart Hospice, Hemphill, Texas.
