Bertie Kay Callaway passed away on September 25, 2026, in Nacogdoches, at the age of 85. Born on October 25, 1940, in Leon, Iowa, to Herbert Robin Wheeler and Marie Snyder Wheeler, Bertie was raised as a farm girl in Iowa before eventually moving to Michigan where she lived for many years. After moving to Texas in 1974, she became a cherished member of the Sabine County community since 2000. Bertie dedicated two decades of her career to Wal-Mart before transitioning to home health care in Pineland. Her passions included hunting, and the great outdoors along with dancing and cooking— especially sharing her culinary creations with her neighbors. Bertie's commitment to her family was evident in the love and care she showered on her grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, Robin Lennier and his wife, Dana, of Mt. Clemens, Michigan; daughters, Roxanna Cramer and her husband, James, of Scrappin' Valley, and Sandra Stockford and her husband, Tim, of Hale, Michigan; sisters, Lois Crabtree of Mason City, Iowa, Joyce Stine of Hemphill, and Sonja Nurmi and her husband, Ken, of Elkmont, Alabama. Bertie was a proud grandmother to 14 grandchildren, 35 greatgrandchildren, and 20 great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews. Bertie was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, three sisters, and one step-grandson.

A member of Pine Grove Baptist Church in Scrappin' Valley, Bertie found solace and community within her church family.

Funeral arrangements are pending and will be handled by Starr Funeral Home in Hemphill, Texas. Bertie's life and legacy will be honored in a ceremony that reflects her enduring spirit and the profound impact she had on those around her.
