Maria Rosario Ortiz passed away on April 14, 2026, in Milam, at the age of 86. Born on August 11, 1939, in Uvalde, to Joaquin Pena and Carolina Flores, Maria spent her early years there and had lived in Leesville, Louisiana before moving to Milam a year ago., Maria had worked at Catfish Junct ion, where she was known for her welcoming smile and the ability to make anyone feel at home. Her warmth and friendliness extended beyond her professional life into her personal passions. She was dedicated member of the American Legion Auxiliary Club 387 in New Llano, Louisiana, and a lifetime member of the VFW. She also cherished playing Bingo, a pastime that brought her much joy and companionship.

Her faith played a significant role in her life. Although she was Catholic, she attended Pine Park Pentecostal Church in Hemphill, embracing a community that supported her spiritual journey.

Maria is survived by her daughters, Wanda Thrash and her husband, Mark, of Fort Myers, Florida, and Elisha Hickman and her husband, Claude, of Milam; her sisters, Irma Luevano, Stella Samarripa, Lydia Torres, Cecilia Luna, Ana Santos, and Pat Perez; her grandchild, Ruben DeLuna; great-grandchildren, Jordan Gallion-Ortiz and Gavin Arabie; and great-great-grandchild, Asuna DeLuna. She was preceded in death by her pare nts, Joaquin Pena and Carolina Flores; her husband, Pedro Ortiz; her sons, Mike Ortiz, Toney Ortiz, and Pedro Ortiz, Jr.; her brother, Frank Pena; and her sister, Dora Desidere.

Services to honor Maria's life will be held at a later date. Starr Funeral Home in Hemphill, Texas, handled the cremation arrangements. Maria's legacy of kindness, community involvement, and devotion to her faith and family will be remembered by all who knew her.
