Joy Nell (Parker) Sowell, 72, of San Augustine County, passed away Friday, May 13, 2022.

She was born June 13, 1949, in San Augustine County, to parents, J.W. Parker and Wilma Flournoy Parker. She was a former longtime resident of the Houston area, where she retired from Southwestern Bell as a client services representative. After retirement, she returned to her native San Augustine County. For the past several years, she had operated Joy's This and That Shop in downtown San Augustine. She enjoyed working with ceramic crafts and attended Crossroads Christian Center Church.

Her survivors include her sisters, Evelyn Miller and husband, Ken of Hockley and Sherry Lockley of New Braunfels; an aunt, Bennie Brookshire of San Augustine County; a sister-in-law, Linda Kay Tolly of Diboll; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Gene Sowell, on May 9, 2022; her parents, J.W. and Wilma Parker; her brother, John Wesley Parker; a brother-in-law, John Fred Lockley; and nephews, Mathew Kendrick Jr. and Kevin Miller.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 17, at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home Chapel, San Augustine, with Pastor Tim Swanson officiating. Interment followed at Sowell Cemetery.
