Drew Ella 'Janie' Stewart Chance, aged 86, passed away on September 12, 2026, in her hometown of Hemphill. Born on September 23, 1939, in Hemphill to Drew Davis Stewart and Lou Ella Pratt Stewart, Janie was a cherished member of the community throughout her life. Janie graduated from Hemphill ISD and devoted her life to her family as a loving housewife, mother, and grandmother. She was an active member of the Free Methodist Church and dedicated over 30 years as a volunteer at the Hemphill Volunteer Fire Department. Her commitment to service and community was evident in every aspect of her life.

She leaves behind her husband of 67 years, D. B. Chance of Hemphill; sons, Glen Chance and his wife, Nena, and Gayle Chance and his wife, Karen, all of Hemphill; and daughter, Cindy Richards and her husband, David, of Winnsboro. Janie also leaves a legacy of love with her sister, Linda Conard of Hemphill, nine grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Tommy Ray Stewart, Wayne D Stewart, Dale Stewart, and Carl David Stewart.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr Street in Hemphill.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Jeanie Mote and Matthew Mote.

Burial will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers include Jay Chance, Dennis Chance, Kaleb Hall, Craig Morton, Roy Lowe, and George Lowe.

Janie's life and legacy will be remembered by all who knew her as a beacon of love and service in her community.
