Velma Jean Raven
Velma Jean Raven, 80, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2026, in Hemphill. Born on September 1, 1945, in Harlingen, to Julius Raven, Sr. and Annie Bell Smith Raven, she spent much of her life in Fort Worth. Velma dedicated many years to serving her community as a rural postal carrier for the United States Postal Service. A lover of literature, Velma cherished her extensive collection of books, which reflected her passion for reading and learning. Her commitment to her work and her love for books were surpassed only by her devotion to her family.
Velma is survived by her son, Anthony Miller and his wife, Denise, of Crowley,; her brother, Julius Raven, Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of Grand Prairie; and her sister, Mattie Battles and her husband, Edward, of Pantego. She was a cherished grandmother to Merrical Miller and Anvelnett Miller, and a proud great-grandmother to Zi'Yare Miller.
Details regarding memorial services will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Starr Funeral Home in Hemphill, Texas. Velma’s life and legacy will be remembered fondly by all who knew her.
