James Ambers Retherford, 61, passed away on April 29, 2026, in San Augustine. Born on July 3, 1964, in Orange, he was the son of Oscar and Margie Chappel. A lifelong resident of Sabine County, James dedicated his career to working as a diesel mechanic in the petroleum industry.

James was a man who cherished the outdoors, never missing an opportunity for a fishing trip and relishing his time hunting. Aside from his love for the outdoors, he was also an avid coin collector, a hobby that brought him much joy and satisfaction.

He is survived by his mother, Margie Chappell of Bronson; his son, Jesse Retherford and wife, Kendall, of San Augustine; daughters, Shanna Retherford of Bronson, and Courtney Retherford of San Augustine; brothers, Jack Retherford and wife, Kimberly, of Zavalla, and Oscar 'Shorty' Retherford of Bronson; sisters, Joyce Brown of Bronson, and Joanna Moody and husband, Malcolm, also of Bronson. James also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews as well as grandchildren, Dixie, Raven, Scarlett, and Alyssa. He was preceded in death by his father, Oscar Retherford; sisters, Loretta Motes and Cindy Dorn; brother, Joe Retherford; and nieces and nephews, Victoria Retherford, Lee Ann Bridges, Justin Motes, and Byron Motes.

Graveside services for James will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at Brookeland Cemetery. The services will be under the direction of Starr Funeral Home of Hemphill, Texas, with Bro. Michael Payne officiating.
