Evangeline Genata Chance
Evangeline Genata Chance, affectionately known as 'Van' or 'Little Bit,' passed away peacefully at her residence in Hemphill, on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at the age of 89. She was born on June 9, 1935, in Jasper County to Willie Mack Risinger and Bulah Hinton Risinger. A lifelong resident of Sabine County, Evangeline dedicated her career to caring for others as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Sabine County Hospital before retiring. She was a devoted mother and grandmother whose greatest joy was ensuring the wellbeing of her family, especially her beloved sons.
Evangeline had a creative spirit and a love for nature. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, painting, quilting, fishing, and watching birds. Her talents and passions brought beauty and warmth to those around her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Truitt Chance; her sisters, Mozell Stogdill and Cleo Self; and her brother, Norris Risinger.
Evangeline is survived by her sons: Charles Truitt Chance and wife, Carolyn, of Rosevine; David Jay Chance and wife, Angie, of Hemphill; and Dennis Ray Chance and wife, Charlotte, of Pineland. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren who will cherish her memory.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr Street, Hemphill, Texas.
Funeral services will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 30, 2025, in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Floyd Wright officiating.
Burial will follow at Patroon Cemetery with David Glawson, Robert Dawson, Robert Smith, Jamie Martin, Hayden Sepulvado, Jayden Zapata, Lincoln Glawson, and Emmett Glawson serving as pallbearers.
