Vernon Hutsell Smith, 89, passed away November 6, 2024, at 8:50 p.m. in Hemphill. He was born in Fairdale on November 15, 1934, to E.M. Smith and Annie Bell Byrd Smith. Vernon married Nellie Faye Cole on October 25, 1959. They went on to have three children, Kenneth, Tammy and Clifford. In 1978, he retired from Ford Motor Company where he had worked for 27 years. He spent the following years working for the county, raising cows and spending as much time as possible on his Kubota.

He is proceeded in death by his parents, Manning and Annie Smith; his brother, Hoyett Smith; his daughter-in-law, Lynn Smith; and his grandchildren, Trissia and Nikolas Qualls.

Vernon is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nellie Smith of Hemphill; his sons, Kenneth Smith of Hemphill and Clifford Smith and wife, Kristin, also of Hemphill; his daughter, Tammy Qualls and husband, Quin, of Montgomery; his sister, Marylee Carlton and husband, Lewis, of Hemphill; his niece, Molly Johnson; nephew, Brian Ferguson and wife, Theresa; great nephew, Micah Johnson; grandchildren, Eric Bland, Kenny Smith, Karissa Qualls, Cassandra Newton and husband, Ricky, Stefan Smith, Forrestt Smith, Gabriel Smith, Gabriella Smith, Elijah Smith and Jordan Smith; and his great grandson, Nikolas Newton.

Funeral services began at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 9, 2024, in Starr Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Charles Moody and Bro. Floyd Wright officiating.

Burial services in Yellowpine Cemetery with Clifford Smith, Kenneth Smith, Quin Qualls, Kenny Smith and Dale Lasneski serving as pallbearers.

Vernon was a loving husband and father and had a generous heart. He was a hardworking man that never complained. He will be deeply missed by all those that loved him.
