Hivie G. McCowan was born to Green Hamilton, Sr., and Rosa Johnson Hamilton on Nov. 21, 1926 in Hemphill. She came here with a twin, Arma G. Her immediate family expanded to include 13 siblings. Their sisters included, Hettie Solomon, Verline Thomas Davis, Elvie Sneed and Mary Bass. Her brothers included; Simon, Lenzy, Miles, Lenon “Jack,” Green, Jr., Lemon and Herbert Hoover, all to which preceded her in death. She was the last sibling of her family.

She grew up in Sabine County and her young days were spent in the Robinson Bend Community when the Toledo Ben Dam forced families to migrate elsewhere. She attended public school at Blue Springs School in the Robinson Bend area and later at Rosenwald in Hemphill. As an adult, (a proud moment) she was able to get her high school diploma. She spent some years in Orange where her late husband, Leamon, was employed by Dupont, Inc.

She was called from this earthly pilgrimage on May 17, 2022. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Leamon McCowan. They were married on Jan. 19, 1946, and remained until his death in 1998. She is survived by a step-daughter, Geraldine McCowan of

She is survived by a step-daughter, Geraldine McCowan of San Francisco CA; four grandchildren who are descendants of her late step-daughter, Louvern Moore Simms; Charlisa L. Moore, LaTrecia R. Moore, Leamon Alpha Moore and Christopher L. Sims. She also leaves to cherish her memories, instructions, and corrections many nieces, nephews, family members, church members and friends.

Funeral service is scheduled for noon on Saturday, May 28, at Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr Street, Hemphill. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to service time. Burial will follow at Macedonia Cemetery, Hemphill.
