Robert Andrew Barnett, “Andy,” passed away on Friday, September 16, 2022, at CHI St. Luke’s Medical Center in Lufkin.

Born on September 14, 1942, in Houston, he was the only child of L.A. and Leola Barnett. He graduated from Pasadena High School and attended Texas A&M before enlisting in the U.S. Army. A penchant for languages and international politics led him to focus on military intelligence, but after a tour in Viet Nam, he returned to the states and entered civilian life. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University and began a new career in law enforcement, participating in many advanced training opportunities including attending the FBI Academy at Quantico, Virginia. After working several years as a policeman, he joined Homeland Security, with assignments in San Antonio, Montana, and Guam. After retirement, he returned to East Texas and settled in San Augustine.

Away from the workplace, he was an active part of his church family, playing the piano and organ, teaching Sunday School, and serving as a deacon. He also was a voracious reader, enjoying books about politics and history.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nina Lister Barnett; daughters, Karen Cunningham and husband Tim of San Augustine, Katheryn Hall and husband Rodney of Lubbock, and Kimberly Petty and husband Jay of Nacogdoches; grandchildren, Caleb Hall and wife Sarah, Rebekah Hall, Mark Cunningham and wife Jordan, Brooke Lopez and husband Donte, and Bethany Petty; and the newest addition to the family, greatgrandson Joseph Lopez. Additional survivors include father-inlaw, L.W. “Red” Lister, and sister-in-law Ann Bridges and husband Alvin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, L.A. and Leola Barnett.

Funeral services were held Sept. 19, at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home Chapel, San Augustine, with Pastor Troy Richardson of Hemphill's First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will followed at Magnolia Springs Cemetery in San Augustine.

Pallbearers: Rodney Hall, Jay Petty, Caleb Hall, Mark Cunningham, Donte Lopez, and Curtis Bridges, with Tim Cunningham as honorary pallbearer.
