Tigers and Bears and Rams, Oh My!
Both Tiger squads saw playoff action this past week as the Tigers hosted Joaquin in baseball bi-district play and the Lady Tigers hosted the Timpson Lady Bears in area round action, both on May 6.
The Tigers would fall behind Joaquin 3-0 early but rallied back with three of their own in the bottom of the third courtesy of a wild pitch and RBI singles from Quentin Smith and Ethan Bennett. Joaquin would go back ahead 6-3 in the fifth inning only to see the Tigers knot it up again as Bennett had a bases clearing double. The game would go to extras where, much to the chagrin of the Tiger faithful, the Rams would plate five runs off of Tiger miscues and hold on to win game one 11-7 in nine innings.
More miscues plagued the tigers in game two as the Rams plated three in their half of the third on a throwing error and a wild pitch to go ahead 3-1. The fifth inning saw the Rams plate two more to make it 5-1. The Tigers would scrap back for two in the top of the sixth, but it wasn’t enough and the Tigers season came to an all to abrupt end as the Rams took game two 5-3. Congratulations Tigers on another great season.
The ladies would face a scrappy Timpson Lady Bear squad Friday night, and it was a scoreless affair until the top of the fourth when Timpson struck for three courtesy of an RBI double from Ramsey and a two run single from Bridges. The ladies would rally in their half of the inning as Emma Frick would score on a sacrifice bunt from Madison Fuller and Selina Sepulvado would score on an RBI single from Faith Hardy to narrow it to 3-2. After holding Timpson in the top of the fifth, the ladies exploded for four runs courtesy of a Bear error and RBI singles from Frick and Briana Kiefer. Cora Sepulvado would shut it down the rest of the way as West Sabine took game one in dramatic fashion 6-3.
The scene switched to Timpson May 7 and the ladies got down to business in the second as the other half of The Emma’s, Emma Bennett, scored Hardy from second on a one hop rocket up the middle to give West Sabine a 1-0 lead after two. The ladies scored once again in the fourth, as K.K. Garza singled in both Carly Wintters and Miah Richardson. After a run scoring double play, Selina Sepulvado would score on a double from Fuller as the ladies led 6-0 after four. The Bears would get on the board in the bottom of the fifth on a wild pitch to narrow it to 6-1. After a scoreless sixth inning, West Sabine tacked on an insurance run as Frick would score on another run scoring double play. The Bears would claw back with two in the bottom half courtesy of RBI singles from Wynn and Ramsey, but it would turn out to not be enough as the Lady Tigers held on to sweep the area series with a 7-3 victory. Sepulvado was stellar in the circle, going the route in both games and allowing just two earned runs(six total)while fanning 19.
The ladies now have a date in the regional quarterfinals with a powerful Groveton Lady Indian squad, fresh off an upset of #11 ranked Deweyville. It will be a two out of three series beginning May 12 with game one at 7 p.m. Game two will follow May 13 at 7 p.m. as well and the if necessary game three is still TBA at press time. All games will be played in Lufkin. Bring the noise, Tiger fans! Bring. The. NOISE!!!!
