Stevens Arrested in Oklahoma; Mother Also Charged as Investigation Continues
Todd Lawrence Stevens, 36, of Bronson, Texas, was arrested Monday evening, February 23, 2026, in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, following an intensive multi-agency search connected to an aggravated assault that occurred February 22 in Bronson, according to the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff George Griffith reported that Stevens was taken into custody by the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office at his father’s residence, where he was found hiding under a mattress in a bedroom. Stevens had been the subject of a manhunt after investigators identified him as a suspect in the violent incident.
Earlier Monday, the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office distributed vehicle information to surrounding state and local agencies regarding a 2007 Jeep Liberty registered to Stevens’ mother, Peggy Josette Sanders. Authorities later documented the vehicle leaving Oklahoma and re-entering Texas, where it was located and stopped in the City of Sherman.
Sanders was identified as the sole occupant of the vehicle and was arrested on unrelated charges and booked into the Grayson County Jail. During an interview with the Sherman Police Department, Sanders provided investigators with Stevens’ location, which ultimately led to his arrest. However, she declined to explain how Stevens traveled to his father’s residence in Oklahoma.
On Tuesday, Sabine County authorities obtained an additional arrest warrant for Sanders, charging her with hindering the apprehension or prosecution of a known felon. Her bond on that charge was set at $500,000.
Stevens remains in custody in Johnston County, Oklahoma, pending extradition to Texas. His bond has been set at $3 million.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges against Stevens are expected in the coming days. These potential upgrades are pending autopsy results and positive identification of burned human remains connected to the case. Authorities also stated that any additional individuals who may have assisted Stevens in covering up the incident or attempting to flee remain under investigation.
The Sabine County Sheriff’s Office expressed appreciation to the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office, Chambers County Fire Marshal’s Office, Sherman Police Department, Johnston County Sheriff’s Office in Oklahoma, and numerous other agencies for their around-the-clock cooperation during the investigation.
At this time, no further press releases are expected.
