Eagles end Hornets season swiflty
Friday night, the Hemphill Hornets travelled to Woodville for the first game of a best-of-3 series in the first round of the 3A Region III baseball playoffs. The Hornets, 4th place finishers in District 21, were matched with the 1st place , District 22 Woodville Eagles.
Woodville wasted no time showing why they won their district, scoring early and often against Hornet starting pitcher Will Pay. With 2 in the 1st, 3 in the 2nd, 5 in the 3rd, and 4 in the 4th, the Eagles closed out a run rule 14-1 win over a Hornet team that never looked comfortable on the field. The Hornets also lost their 2B Skylar Paddie, ejected in the 2nd inning for Interfering with the catcher while attempting to score from 3rd. The ejection also meant that Paddie would not be available for Game 2.
Saturday evening, Game 2 took place in Hemphill, with the Eagle bats taking up where they left off the night before. 2 runs in the 1st inning put the Hornets playing catch up, unfortunately their bats weren't in a cooperative mood. 1 run on 3 hits, with 3 walks was the extent of the Hornet offense, scoring only 1 run, that one unearned, as the Eagles took the bus home after a 13-1 series ending win.
