Sabine County Sheriff's Office reports that the Chambers County Sheriff's Office was dispatched over night to a vehicle fire under a river bridge near mile marker 805 on Interstate 10. Local fire departments extinguished the fire and located burned human remains inside the vehicle. Chambers County Sheriff's Office was dispatched and the body taken to the Jefferson County Medical Examiner's Office for autopsy. The recovered vehicle matches the year model and coloring of the victim's missing truck. The injuries reported on the body by the medical examiner's office match the reported injuries to the victim at the time of the shooting. These factors lead the Sabine County Sheriff's Office to believe that this is the vehicle and potentially the body of the victim, involved in the shooting in Sabine County on Sunday.

Sabine County Sheriff's Office through investigation and available technology has been able to determine that Todd Stevens is currently located outside of Sabine County. The Sheriff's Office is working with multiple agencies across East and Northeast Texas as well as following up on multiple leads as to the whereabouts of Stevens.

This investigation is currently very active and updated information will be released when appropriate.

The Sabine County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating a reported shooting that occurred Sunday night, February 22, 2026, on Bronson Cemetery Road and is asking the public for assistance as the search continues for those involved.

According to a press release from the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy received information at approximately 8:15 p.m. that a shooting had taken place at a residence along Bronson Cemetery Road. Deputies responded to the scene and discovered a small pool of blood in the driveway, but no individuals were present at the location.

Investigators were later able to locate two witnesses who reported that a man identified as Todd Stevens, 36, of Bronson, allegedly shot another man believed to be Cody Thompson, 43, of Burkeville. Witnesses stated that after the shooting, Stevens reportedly entered Thompson’s pickup truck and left the scene with Thompson still inside the vehicle.

As of Monday morning, officials said Thompson’s condition remains unknown, and no area hospitals had reported receiving a patient matching his description overnight.

Deputies are continuing efforts to identify and locate Thompson’s vehicle. The license plates were reportedly removed prior to the incident. The truck is described as a 1990s model Chevrolet extended cab pickup, white in color, with primer on the passenger side, bondo on the roof over the passenger door, and a bright yellow spray-painted tailgate. Authorities say the vehicle may be displaying a temporary Texas license plate.

A search warrant was executed at the scene early Monday morning, and investigators recovered several items that were consistent with witness accounts of the incident.

The Sabine County Sheriff’s Office is in the process of seeking arrest warrants for Stevens and considers him to be armed and dangerous. Authorities strongly advise the public not to approach him. Anyone who believes they may have seen Stevens, Thompson, or the described vehicle is urged to contact law enforcement immediately.

Anyone with information related to this case is asked to contact the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office at (409) 787-2266 or their local law enforcement agency.
