Griffith to take reins for Sabine County
Commissioners Court appoints new sheriff
In Monday's regular scheduled Commissioners Court, Judge Daryl Melton remarked on the passing of 24 year veteran Sheriff Tom Maddox. "A huge hole occurred with his passing. We have been taxed with appointing someone to fill it."
Per local code #87.041, the Commissioner Court will fill vacancy by appointment thru majority vote of commissioners present and voting. The appointment will stand until the next general election. Melton then stated that the court held a special called meeting that was closed session between the county attorney, commissioners and county judge on February 21st.
It was their finding that Chief Deputy George Griffith was that candidate. Griffith has served with the Sabine County Sheriff's Department for 21 years and was Maddox's Chief Deputy for 10 years. Upon motion to recommend made by the judge, Commissioner Brent Cox seconded and Commissioner Keith Nabours offered a third.
The motion passed unanimously. The court asked Griffith if he would accept the appointment and he agreed. County Clerk Jamie Clark along with County Treasurer Tricia Jacks reported that a bond would be applied for and paid within the next 24-48 hours upon which time, Griffith would be sworn in as Sheriff of Sabine County.
The swearing in ceremony will take place in the District Courtroom located on the third floor of the Sabine County Courthouse, Friday, February 28th at 10 a.m.
